"Innocent Erendira" is the wondrous title novella in this short collection for Gabriel Garcia Marquez completists. It's the 1972 tale (filmed in 1984) of a rapacious old woman who cruelly pimps out her beautiful and compliant granddaughter in various colorful Colombian locales. It's full of the mature Garcia Marquez' poetic magical realism, with unique phrasings like "...a settlement with miserable and burning streets where the goats committed suicide from desolation when the wind of misfortune blew."

Virtually all of the 11 other stories in the book are death-obsessed early work--worth reading only to see what Garcia Marquez grew out of.

I bought it for class. Not bad, but not that interesting.
There are only a few stories in here really worth reading Erendia, Death Constant Beyond Love, and the Woman Who Came at Six O'Clock. All the stories in general are pretty morbid.
